The American Academy of Pediatrics, through its Pedialink site, is offering an online course for primary care clinicians titled ‘Collaborative Mental Health Care.’  From the site:

Many primary care clinicians cite a lack of referral sources as a major barrier to expanding their role in mental health care. The purpose of this course is to address this barrier by answering the question: I’ve identified a mental health or substance abuse concern that requires expertise I don’t have; so now what do I do?

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, a primary care clinician will be able to:

  • List key services needed by children and adolescents experiencing mental health and substance abuse (MH and SA) problems and identify the professionals trained to provide them.
  • Determine those clinical circumstances that require specialty MH or SA services.
  • Describe methods for making effective referrals to MH/SA specialists.
  • Describe models of collaborative mental health practice.
