The Catalyst Center, a national center dedicated to improving health care coverage and financing for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN), has a State Data/Chartbook with selected indicators for health coverage and health care financing.

The data show that most CYSHCN in Virginia have some kind of health coverage.  However, the chartbook indicates that most private health insurance does not provide adequate coverage for the CYSHCN population.  As a result, underinsurance is a greater problem for CYSHCN.

Of special note are data on the experience with the system of care for Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN).  In Virginia, the majority of families of CSHCN are partners in shared decision-making for their child’s care but less than half of CSHCN receive coordinated, ongoing, comprehensive care within a medical home.
